A Pair of Cuba-Destined Humanitarian Sailboats Reported Unaccounted For following Leaving the Coast of Mexico.
A comprehensive search and recovery mission is presently under way in the Caribbean waters for two missing boats transporting relief goods journeying from the Mexican coast to the island of Cuba.
Naval Rescue Efforts Deployed
Authorities in Mexico has deployed navy personnel and reconnaissance aircraft to locate the two vessels, which were transporting no fewer than 9 personnel, per a official statement.
The vessels had been projected to arrive in the Cuban capital on Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been no communication from them and no confirmation of their docking, authorities reported.
The Situation of Relief to Cuba
The island nation has relied heavily on Mexico's over recent weeks, as the island grapples with widespread power outages across the country.
"The skippers and their teams are seasoned mariners, and both vessels are equipped with appropriate safety equipment and signalling equipment," a spokesperson involved in the effort commented.
The nine-person crew are nationals of Poland, France, Cuba and the US. Mexican authorities said it has opened communications with maritime rescue coordination centres from the involved countries along with their consular staff.
"The group is working closely with the officials and continue to be hopeful in the crews' ability to reach Havana safely," the spokesperson added.
Recent Humanitarian Delivery
Just days before, the Cuban government publicly celebrated and officially received another boat that had carried a significant amount of donated goods to the island.
That boat, called "Granma 2.0" after the boat in which Fidel Castro came back to Cuba to begin the armed struggle in the 1950s, carried solar panels, drugs, formula milk, cycles and foodstuffs.
Larger International Context
Non-governmental organizations and volunteers have primarily led initiatives to deliver critical assistance to Cuba since January, when a fuel embargo on the country began.
International organizations have since warned of ""critical" supply shortages, with over 50,000 surgical procedures cancelled in Cuba due to energy rationing.
Diplomatic measures have intensified in recent months, with remarks from different officials underscoring the complex state of diplomatic ties.
Responding to certain proposals, a senior government figure stated firmly that "the socialist system of Cuba is non-negotiable."
Indications suggest that preliminary steps of discussions were initiated, although their current progress remains uncertain.
The naval forces said it was dedicated to using the full extent of its capabilities at its command to discover the vessels and guarantee the well-being of the crews.
At this time, there has been silence on the disappeared vessels by the Cuban government.
