Adult Swim's Top New Show of This Year Gets a Significant Extension for Seasons 2 and 3.
During the fall season, the late-night programming block welcomed back its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, later that same month, the channel unveiled a fresh animated series with a strikingly different tone. Haha, You Clowns was heartwarming and calm, in the spirit of a animated take of a contemplative talk show. At a time often marked by cynicism, this show's earnestness struck a chord and helped it become a breakout hit.
A Significant Investment
In mid-December, Adult Swim made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for a further two seasons. This gives creator Joe Cappa a massive runway to develop the world of the Campbell family. The show centers on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose primary trait is their strong bond for their widowed father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four main characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the audience of the show who took a chance on the show and shared it with others," stated Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for seasons to come."
A President's Endorsement
Accompanying the news laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and uniquely eerie." He shouted out the fans who discovered the show and supported its uniquely offbeat sensibility.
"All of you supported this new show, championed for it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Comforting Counterpoint
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a gentle counterpart" to other adult animated fare. It offers something surprisingly comfy about following this endearing family navigate their everyday routines.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa shared his desire to move the comedy genre beyond its prevailing sarcastic tone. He linked this trend to various cultural shifts.
“There's this level of irony that we keep returning to,” noted Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we need to laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”
What Comes Next
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa has the opportunity to help usher in that change he described. If nothing else, the renewal promises audiences additional episodes to experience the warm glow of the endearing Campbell clan.
The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The entire series is ready to watch on HBO Max.
