Alan Turing Institute Initiates New Mission to Safeguard Britain from Cyber-Attacks
The UK's top artificial intelligence institute has unveiled a major project to help protect the nation from online assaults targeting essential systems including energy, transportation and utilities.

The UK's premier AI research center will execute a scientific research initiative specifically developed to safeguard Britain from adversarial risks, according to a Tuesday declaration.
This new direction follows significant changes at the publicly-funded organization, including the departure of its ex-leader last month after both employee protests and government pressure for strategic overhaul.
Increasing Digital Threats
The latest project comes amid rising apprehension about Britain's vulnerability to internet outages and cyber-attacks.
Recent incidents have highlighted these weaknesses, including a major outage affecting worldwide digital services and latest online threats that disrupted production at major factories and distribution networks across various businesses.
Management and Supervision
A previous senior officer of the Britain's aerial defense command will provide findings next month on how the publicly-supported center can optimally help the scale of government AI ambitions in defense, homeland protection and information gathering.
Strategic Realignment
The center's head, a former Amazon UK boss, confirmed that 78 different research projects at the center employing hundreds have been closed, spun out or completed because they aren't consistent with the revised strategy.
Internal Challenges
The institute has faced organizational challenges since last year as workers demonstrated against restructuring, culminating in a team of staff members filing a whistleblower complaint to the appropriate oversight organization.
The institute's leadership stated that these employee allegations were independently investigated by a external organization that found them to have no substance.
Expanded Research Focus
The institute will also focus on utilizing machine learning for climate-related uses and health innovations.
Researchers will create methods to use the quickly-evolving systems to more quickly and precisely predict changes in climate conditions, sea conditions and sea ice, partly to more effectively guide national crisis management units.
The institute will also target tangible emissions reductions in transportation networks, production methods and essential systems.
Health Technology Breakthroughs
In the healthcare industry, the priority will be on creating digital twins of heart systems, representing a frontline of personalized AI-enabled medicine that could better therapeutic procedures and recovery prospects for critically ill cardiac patients.
