Astronaut Reveals Depression In the Wake of Wave of Backlash After Historic Trip

A pioneering space traveler has publicly detailed her struggle with mental health after being subjected to a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.

Amanda Nguyen – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the short-duration mission in April, which also included celebrity crewmates.

The much-publicized journey was met with derision by some, who challenged its value and ecological impact.

Reflecting on the situation, Ms. Nguyen, who was celebrated as the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction eclipsed her moment under an landslide of gendered hatred.

“I told her my depression might last for years,” the astronaut shared in a social media post, referring to a supportive conversation from a mission companion in the aftermath of the journey.

She characterized the news reports and online discourse as an barrage beyond typical human coping.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she revealed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”

Buried Under Misogyny

Ms. Nguyen, who has conducted studies in women's health research and operated research during the flight, said everything she had worked for – including her scientific research and extensive preparation to the historic significance of her background – was drowned out under the avalanche of gendered attacks.

She is widely recognized for her tireless campaigning championing the cause of sexual assault survivors.

Her own goal of reaching space was put on hold after being assaulted during her university years, leading to a long campaign for accountability.

Finding Solid Ground

Months following reaching space, she reports that the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she acknowledged the well-wishers whose messages of encouragement pulled her through. “You all saved me,” she said.

She noted that amid the criticism, significant positive outcomes had come out of the experience, such as elevated attention for her women's health research and platforms for her activism.

The Historic Journey

The self-operating spacecraft departed its launch site in April, carrying the six-woman crew on a short trip that exceeded the edge of outer space.

The team of pioneers also comprised accomplished professionals from various fields.

The company behind the mission is a private space firm launched by a well-known tech mogul.
