A Chinese judicial body has sentenced five prominent members of an infamous Burmese mafia to capital punishment as Chinese authorities maintains its campaign on scam activities in South East Asia.

Altogether, 21 Bai family individuals and collaborators were found guilty of scams, homicide, assault and other crimes, said a official document posted on the court website.

The group is among a few of mafias that became dominant in the last two decades and changed the impoverished remote area of the town into a wealthy base of gambling establishments and red-light districts.

Over the past few years they shifted to illegal operations in which thousands of smuggled individuals, several of them Chinese, are ensnared, harmed and obligated to scam others in illegal enterprises worth billions.

Specifics of the Sentencing

Syndicate boss the patriarch and his heir the younger Bai were among the several men sentenced to execution by the court in Shenzhen. Another individual, Hu Xiaojiang and A fourth person were the remaining convicted.

A couple of figures of the Bai family mafia were handed delayed executions. Five were condemned to permanent incarceration, while more figures were handed jail sentences ranging from a period of 3-20 years.

This family, who commanded their own militia, created forty-one facilities to house their cyberscam schemes and gambling houses, government said.

Magnitude of Criminal Schemes

Such illegal enterprises involved exceeding twenty-nine billion local currency ($4.1 billion; £3.1bn). They also led to the demise of several Chinese citizens, the suicide of an individual and multiple harm, state media reported.

The strict penalties issued by the judicial body are a component of China's campaign to remove the large scam operations in the region - and issue a firm message to further illegal syndicates.

Context of the Groups

These groups gained influence in the 2000s with the support of a prominent figure - who now leads Myanmar's regime. He had aimed to bolster allies in the town after ousting its former warlord.

Among the groups, the this family were "the top", the son before told state media.

During that period, we was the leading in each of the government and military spheres," the individual said in a film about the Bai family, shown on official channels in the summer.

During the report, a individual at their fraud facilities described the abuse he had endured there: besides being hit, he had his fingernails yanked out with instruments and two of his fingers cut off with a blade.

Additional Accusations

The son is included in those who were sentenced to execution this week. He has also been independently sentenced of planning to smuggle and produce eleven tons of methamphetamine, reports announced.

Downfall of the Groups

The families' end happened in last year as circumstances altered.

For years Beijing has encouraged the regime to rein in fraudulent schemes in the area.

Last year, the authorities announced detention orders for the key members of such families.

The patriarch, the clan's head, was included in the figures who were extradited to China from Myanmar in early 2024.

For what reason is the Chinese government putting so much effort to go after the clans?" a Chinese investigator commented in the summer film.
The purpose is to caution individuals, regardless of who you are, your location, when you commit these terrible acts against the citizens, you will be held accountable."
