"Any idea when you're chatting with the band?" a text pops up. "I wanted to ask if I can become their fourth member."

There is only a single issue: The sender also wants to be the Haims' additional sibling. What's more, we are far from alone. Several famous admirers have publicly coveted the position.

It's clear something is happening. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana launched their path performing shows at small eateries with their parents. Today, they are multi-time Grammy contenders.

In the tradition of the greatest ensembles, they're a inseparable gang. Their videos frequently show them striding in sync down the streets of Los Angeles. In concert, they play with such unfettered happiness you can't help but think, "I'd love to be part of that, too."

"How often on tour that fans approached us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I picked up a bass'," states Alana, the most junior of the sisters. "It is the greatest honour. That is recognition in itself. We've done our job if we can motivate others to start a band."

Award Milestone

The trio have called into their homes, where they're resting up after an extensive tour in promoting their latest album, I Quit.

They're presently celebrating the news it's been nominated for best rock album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the very first all-female band ever in contention for the trophy.

"I watch the nominations every year, so it sort of feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is announced," notes Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this correctly or am I imagining things'?"

The significance of the nomination is deeply felt by the band.

"We truly set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a major milestone," says Alana. "But we're just grateful for the female artists that came before us."

Heartbreak and Laughter

The record was born from a time of personal change. All three sisters were single, and the music explores that strange transitional period where you're relieved to be free, but not yet ready to start anew.

The themes detail endings and farewells. The sisters desire love, but not the relationships they've experienced. You can hear them working out in real time who they aspire to be.

"I adore summary, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a personal statement. You have to actively work on ignoring the criticism and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Evolution of Style

That recent toughness called for a new sound – more organic and powerful than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that started with the drum sound.

"Drums are such a detailed thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our book," quips Alana. "Our motto is, our albums don't start until we find the right drum sound."

Stories and Collective Humor

The band's honesty inspired the album's marketing, where the sisters shared some of their romantic tales.

A former partner left Este over a medical consideration. Alana recalled a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"Experiencing these breakups, you just feel like there's no hope," says Alana. "Therefore to be able to find humor in those stories and have them tell you more outrageous stories, it's incredible."

A Secure Future

One can easily sense a evolution in the band. Now, Haim are more assured of their place in the industry.

They're top-billed acts, with chart-topping albums and an global following.

Yet the sister act will always be their number one focus.

"Me and my siblings have been performing since I was little," says Alana. "It's like no alternative that we were meant to do. And I'm really grateful we've gotten here and we're still making music."
