Israelis mark two-year remembrance of 7 October incident as Gaza ceasefire talks continue
Israelis have come together across the country to remember 24 months since the Hamas-conducted offensive on October 7th, 2023, as discussions proceeded in Egypt over a resolution to the hostilities in Gaza.
The assault resulted in over 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others abducted back to Gaza as hostages. It was the uniquely most fatal day for Jewish people since the Second World War.
Israel reacted by launching a defensive operation in Gaza which has claimed more than 67,000 people, according to the region's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its numbers are seen as reliable by the United Nations and other global organizations.
"The aggressive adversaries have struck forcefully, but they have not broken us," the leader remarked on Tuesday.
He also vowed to "achieve all the goals of the war: the return of all the abducted, the destruction of the Hamas government and the guarantee that Gaza will not pose a threat to Israel".
Commemorative Ceremonies Across Israel
The government authorities delayed official commemorations until 16 October - after the end of the festive season - but gatherings still occurred around the country on that day.
A remembrance service for the loved ones of people who lost their lives in the Hamas attack was organized in the coastal city. Arranged by the families themselves, it was televised on Israeli broadcast stations.
Hours earlier, a moment of silence was respected around the country.
Ceasefire Talks in Egypt
Simultaneously, the conflicting parties' negotiating teams gathered in the North African Red Sea resort of the negotiation venue for a continuing round of mediated discussions to review the conditions of the plan.
A senior Palestinian official involved in the discussions revealed that an late session of negotiations began at 19:00 Cairo time.
The representative explained the earlier meeting concluded without tangible results, amid conflicting views over the suggested Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over assurances Hamas wants to make certain Israel does not resume fighting after the opening period of the deal.
He commented that the discussions are "challenging and have still not deliver any real breakthrough," but pointed out that facilitators are making efforts to close the differences between the conflicting groups.
Critical Points in Talks
- An enduring ceasefire
- The exchange of the prisoners still detained by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
- The removal of troops from Gaza
- Arrangements for humanitarian aid provision
- Future governance of the area
Public Feeling
In the city's Hostages Square earlier, young a woman - whose sibling endured the attack on the Nova music festival, where 378 people were lost their lives and numerous more were abducted by Hamas fighters - explained: "Nowhere appears as home anymore and until each abducted person come back no one will be secure."
"After we see everybody home returned, we can relax once more. Then we can start to heal," she added.
Near the leader's official dwelling in Jerusalem, people congregated to express their backing for the loved ones of the captives. Israel reports 48 remain in captivity in Gaza, 20 of whom are considered to be living.
Demonstrator Atalia Regev explained: "It's necessary do every compromise required for the abducted to come back home. But we really want promises that we will be protected."
Opinion polls now consistently show that about seventy percent of Israeli citizens want the conflict to end in return for the freedom of the hostages.
Gaza Situation
At the site of the music event, those paying respects gathered to pay their respects.
From the site, the sound of military attacks and explosions could be heard just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where local people said the heavy Israeli bombardment carried on.
In Gaza City, air and artillery strikes were noted in the early hours of Tuesday in the west side neighborhood, Rimal and Nasr districts and in the east side neighbourhood of the community, as well Shati refugee camp to the north-west.
"Once the night arrives, the dread arrives with it," evacuated Gaza City resident a mother, whose 17-year-old son was lost his life by an Israeli aerial attack previously, shared.
"My family are terrified of the attacks. All the night we are resting together, clinging, notably my smallest child who puts his face on me the entire evening."
"Continuously we look at the reports to see the situation. And I'm concerned that this halt will not be finalized and that the fighting will resume to us."
