Boxing is experiencing a real slump this year, with limited compelling matchups and considerably fewer thrilling fights than usual. The possibility of a high-stakes and fascinating heavyweight contest between Parker and Wardley at the iconic O₂ Arena offers a welcome respite to the beleaguered business. Joe Parker is the interim champion and they have formally instructed Usyk to fight him, but the Ukrainian was sidelined. Parker wants to fight anyway.

“Fabio is similarly well-placed and he only had to wait for his chance. He said ‘No.’ He chose to box – and against Parker because it offers him an opportunity to accelerate his path.”

Parker’s Perspective

Parker, aging 34 soon, said: “This is do or die. I am not thinking about losing. I have respect for my rival and his accomplishments and his preparation for this fight. But I am on a superior tier and I am going to show it on Saturday.”

Wardley’s Outlook

Wardley turns 31 in December, and he said: “This is a monumental event for the pair of us. It is obviously the biggest fight of my boxing journey and the most important fight ever. But each time I rise to the occasion I rise to the occasion. The upcoming fight will be the same. The divide between where Joe is and where people think I am has been a frequent topic in my boxing life.

“He's a seasoned veteran for a considerable period, with a lot of fights on his record. In no way is he an old man but he has been in the sport for a while and had numerous grueling matches. I’ve been in a few wars myself and I understand they take a toll. He has been in a lot more of those compared to me.”

The Ultimate Prediction

But the general belief is that Parker will be too experienced, and too technically proficient, for his opponent. He is favored to secure a bruising battle with the confidence that he is the leading contender for a title shot against Usyk – currently the top heavyweight globally by a clear gap.
