The acclaimed crime series AC-12 is officially returning for its 7th season, announced by the broadcaster.

A brand new six-part series written by the show's creator starts production in Northern Ireland this spring, according to the network.

The actress shared her enthusiasm about the comeback, saying she was "thrilled" about the show's renewal. Adrian Dunbar added, "How wonderful it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming together soon."

The last series concluded in 2021 with a final episode that drew in over 17 million audience members. Speculation about a potential return have been widespread ever since, but confirmation only arrived this week.

New Challenges for The Team

Series seven begins with AC-12 no longer existing and renamed as the new police oversight body, as revealed by the announcement.

Martin Compston's character, Kate Fleming, and Adrian Dunbar's part remain working to tackle corruption within the police force.

Their work "has never been more difficult", and in this climate, the trio will take on their "most delicate case to date."

Fresh Face and Complex Case

A new character, Det Insp Dominic Gough, described as a charming officer celebrated for takedowns of criminal networks, faces allegations of abusing his position to act as a offender.

Yet, this investigation could be a intentional diversion from a bigger threat still operating in the background, plot details suggested.

In a statement, the creator said: "All cast and crew are deeply thankful to the dedicated viewers."

"We're privileged to have had countless followers watch the developments of AC-12 over multiple series and we are thrilled to be coming back for a new season."

Mercurio continued: "Corruption in the UK is supposed to have ended while Line of Duty was not airing, so I've been compelled to use my imagination."

Cast Reactions

The Scottish actor described appearing in the series as "the role of a career".

"Beyond the program's popularity but the colleagues I've collaborated with I now call some of my closest friends."

"I'm excited to wear the uniform again and get the team back together," he added.

The Nottingham-born actress remarked: "It goes without saying I'm very happy Line of Duty is returning! Can't wait to work with the creator, Martin and Dunbar again. The city, we'll be there shortly!"

The veteran actor commented: "As we count down the unit return, what a joy it is to know that the central trio will be back filming next year."

"Pleased with the news and looking forward to those unexpected plot developments."

Show History

Line of Duty launched in the early 2010s and became a highly successful TV dramas of the last decade, attracting guest stars such as Lennie James.

Broadcasters haven't revealed when the new season will premiere.

The conclusion of series six drew the extended plot about the search for kingpin known as "H" to a close, and producers said at the moment there were no intentions for further series.

Nevertheless, the network confirmed on Tuesday that a new season is now in development.
