Preparations for Trump-Putin Summit Delayed Days Following Hungarian Capital Negotiations Proposed

Currently exist "no arrangements" for US President President Trump to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin "in the near term", a White House official has declared.

Last Thursday the US president indicated he and the Kremlin leader would hold talks in Budapest within two weeks to discuss the ongoing hostilities.

A planning session between America's top diplomat Marco Rubio and his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov was due to be held this week - but the White House clarified the two had had a "constructive" call and that a meeting was not "required".

The White House withheld any more details on why the talks had been postponed.

Previous Developments

The US president had raised the possibility of a Budapest summit over the phone with the Russian leader, a just prior to meeting Ukraine's President Zelensky in the Oval Office.

Certain accounts indicated his talks with Zelensky had been a "contentious discussion", with those familiar indicating Trump had urged him to relinquish significant territories of Ukraine's east as part of a deal with Moscow.

Yet, on this week Trump supported a peace initiative backed by Ukraine and EU officials to halt the war on the current front line.

"Leave it as is where it stands," he stated.

Russia has repeatedly pushed back against pausing the existing front lines.

Moscow was solely focused on "enduring stability", Russia's foreign minister said on this week, implying that freezing the front line would only amount to a temporary ceasefire.

Diplomatic Positions

The "fundamental issues" of the war required resolution, the Russian diplomat emphasized, using Moscow's terminology for a range of maximalist demands that encompass the acknowledgment of full Russian sovereignty over the eastern region as well as the disarmament of Ukraine – a non-starter for Ukraine and its EU supporters.

Zelensky commented talks regarding the current lines were the "start of negotiations" but that Russia was "employing all tactics" to avoid diplomacy.

He further commented the exclusive issue that could make Moscow "pay attention" was that of the supply of distance-capable munitions to Ukraine.

Weapons Discussions

The Russian president's spontaneous discussion with Trump last Thursday came ahead of speculation that the United States was considering delivering distance-capable weapons to Ukrainian forces that could theoretically target deep into Russia.

The Ukrainian leader stated it was the missile discussion that had pressured the Kremlin to participate in talks. The talk about the weapons systems had proven to be a "significant input" in international relations", he remarked.
