Scream OG Star Matthew Lillard Fears He Could Spoil the Series with the Seventh Installment.
The long-awaited horror film Scream 7 is set to arrive in theaters in the coming year, and it is preparing for a major family reunion. This latest installment marks the iconic return of Neve Campbell as final girl Sidney Prescott, following her absence from the last entry. She will, per tradition, be joined by Courtney Cox as journalist Gail Weathers, but they aren't the only beloved characters making a comeback.
"Coming back to a character you played in your twenties when you're 55 was a challenge that gave me sleepless nights," the actor reveals.
A Triumphant Comeback for Fallen Favorites
It has been established that three different characters from earlier films are slated to reappear in this new outing, even though meeting their demise in prior movies. The precise method of their resurrection remains a mystery. Fans should get ready for the reappearance of the beloved and seemingly immortal officer Dewey Riley, the filmmaker and Scream 3 killer Roman Bridger, and a member of the original murderous duo, Stu Macher.
The Pressure of Legendary Status
For Matthew Lillard, returning to the series for the first time since a brief cameo is a long-held wish, even if he is apprehensive about the audience response. The actor clearly remembers the exact moment he got the news from the series creator.
"I recall the phone call. I recall the small talk. I remember him asking. That instance is indelibly imprinted on my psyche," he states. "Therefore I'm really proud to be back. I'm thrilled to be back."
Stu Macher has achieved iconic status in the decades since the 1996 movie was released, which made Lillard feeling quite trepidatious.
"Truthfully, that's a part that lives in infamy, for better or worse," he notes. "A part that is now represented in every single Scream mask that appears every Halloween."
The Anxiety of Letting Down the Fans
Now that production has concluded, Lillard is in the same position as everyone else to see the finished film. He admits to feeling significant pressure about hoping not to be the one who ruins the popular series.
"The outcome is either a success and people are excited to have you, or it's a miss," Lillard points out. "Going into it, I don't know if the movie's gonna work. I don't know if people want to see me. I've definitely seen enough people state and say, 'Stu is dead. Why are they returning to this idea?' So the truth is that I feel a lot of pressure to not ruin the franchise. I hope people exiting Scream 7 and thinking, 'Well, that sucked, and Matthew Lillard was the reason.'"
Speculation and Anticipation Abound
While many longtime fans are excited for Stu's return, the central mystery of how he and the others return persists. Maybe they live as manifestations in Sidney's mind, similar to a previous plot device. Or, maybe they are somehow still living in a strange shared scenario. The possibility of a meta-horror narrative, reminiscent of earlier horror movies, also exists.
Moviegoers will discover the answer when Scream 7 arrives in theaters.
