The Fashion Icon Antony Price, Famed for Creating Looks for Bowie and Duran Duran, Dies at 80.
Fashion legend Antony Price, the groundbreaking style architect who crafted many legendary styles favored by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has died at 80 years old.
He was celebrated for his architectural shapes and dramatic aesthetics, including the light-hued ensembles that appeared in rock band Duran Duran's landmark music video for "their hit Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance online."
His passing follows less than a month after he unveiled his newest line in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Singer Lily Allen showcased a dress inspired by the famous black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" once worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.
A Lasting Legacy
Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price headed for London during the sixties to study at the esteemed Royal College of Art.
Shortly after his graduation, he started his work in clothing for men at the label Stirling Copper and was behind the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that rock legend Mick Jagger famously wore during the band's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He launched his own brand in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show was launched by looks from supermodel Jerry Hall, who later wore the marriage dress Price designed for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.
Partnerships with Stars
A long-time collaborator of David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the distinctive jacket the artist wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His trademark skill to fuse elements of men's and women's fashion along with his technical proficiency in shaping body-hugging looks established him as a "true original," according to the British Fashion Council.
In the 1990s, he commenced designing pieces for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, including various looks for her American tour after becoming Duchess.
Following a profession lasting half a century, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London just last month in conjunction with the label 16Arlington.
