The Game UN:Me: A Psychological Horror Merging Silent Hill and Social Deduction Mechanics

The recent Day of the Devs digital showcase unveiled several fascinating upcoming titles, but one especially has captured the imagination: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo experience appears to fuse together the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill title with the paranoid deduction heart of Among Us.

"This is a distinctive experience where a young woman containing multiple human souls within her must escape from a maze of the psyche," states developer Yasukazu Kawai.

Stepping Into a Shattered Mind

In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed heroine who appears to be of high school age. Within her exist four separate souls, all possessing their own anxieties and drives. These souls can take over spontaneously, releasing their deep-seated terrors upon her suddenly.

Judging by revealed footage, much of the action takes place within a eerie hospital, though additional clips show the main character exploring a abandoned church.

An Environment of Individual Horror

"What are you fearful of? What causes you uncomfortable?" asks game director Shun Sasaki. "High places. Small rooms. Authority figures. Things that appear minor to other people can activate a deep instinct inside us. This game delves into that idea — fears that are unique to every individual."

The core mechanic revolves around managing whichever soul surfaces at any given time. However, these identities will change involuntarily as you play. While exploring, every persona's fears become exaggerated and assault the girl in succession. When the soul changes, so does the particular terror the player experiences.

Unsettling Aesthetics and a Fatal Choice

Initially, UN:Me shares striking visual similarities with the Silent Hill franchise. The hospital is filled with orderlies who all share the same face, with unnervingly wide smiles. Figures in the lobby have large blooms where their necks are. Floral motifs are a recurring theme, juxtaposing organic elegance with supernatural dread.

Yet, UN:Me presents a singular mechanic. Players must determine which of the four entities inhabiting the protagonist is the "real" one. "Each of the souls asserts that the body belongs to them," notes a developer. "During the game, you need to figure out who is authentic."

After a player have deduced a soul is an impostor, they are forced to destroy it. But, since each soul can deceive or hide the truth, it is very easy to choose incorrectly.

"Perhaps you've already destroyed the true [soul] by your own actions," the narration states. "The final entity remaining might be a fake. Either way, your decisions are final."

UN:Me does not yet have a publicly announced launch window, but it is available to wishlist on digital storefronts.
