The Greek tennis star Contemplated Retirement Amid Pain-Filled 2025 Season

The athlete entered the previous US Open as the 26th seed.

The tennis professional disclosed he thought about ending his career due to debilitating back issues throughout the season.

The 27-year-old, who has reached a career-high ranking of world number three, was a finalist against Novak Djokovic in the finals of the 2021 French Open and the 2023 Australian Open.

Now ranked 36th in the world after a limited schedule post a second-round departure in New York in August, he stated continuous medical care is finally showing positive results.

"I'm most excited is to observe how my training responds during actual training concerning my back," commented Tsitsipas.

"My primary worry centered on if I was able to finish a match," he added, noting the injury plagued him "for the past six to eight months."

"I kept asking, 'Can I compete another contest pain-free?'"

"It was genuinely scary following the loss in Flushing Meadows [to Germany's Daniel Altmaier]. I could not to walk for two days. That is the moment begin to question the path ahead."

He also reported being content with the present treatment regimen after finishing five weeks of pre-season training without any pain.

He is scheduled to compete with the Greek team at the team event, drawn against Naomi Osaka's Japan and the Great Britain squad led by Emma Raducanu. The tournament takes place across Australian cities in early January, just before the season's first major.

"The greatest victory for 2026 is to not have concerns about finishing matches," he expressed.

"It provides fantastic feedback realizing you had a pre-season without pain – I wish for it to last. I want to deliver in 2026 and at the United Cup.

"The effort is invested. The crucial element is total belief that I can return to where I was. I will try all means to make it happen."
