Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge Technology This Season.

Wimbledon court with video review system

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in employing video review systems.

Video review technology will be launched at The Championships this year.

Competitors will gain the option to challenge specific calls made by the official, following the system currently in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

The new system is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This development follows just a season following the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which terminated the longstanding role of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players will not be permitted to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to re-examine specific situations, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there is no limit on the amount of challenges a player can initiate.

Practical Application

A recent incident took place in a recent tournament recently, where a top player initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a difficult call for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and determined Draper was guilty of hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

This technology are not new for Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews in place at every one of its events.

Other Changes

A further change at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where fans have occasionally been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.

In other news, with exactly a century of days to go until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have also announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
