Zohran Mamdani confirms he will make his home in the iconic Gracie Mansion
New York City's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to make his home in the historic Gracie Mansion, leaving behind his rent-controlled apartment that became a focal point during his election bid.
An Iconic Home
Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has functioned as the official residence for the majority of New York City mayors after the mid-20th century.
But, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a central platform, was not quick to announce his residency plans right away after his electoral win in November.
"The choice rested on the security of my family and the need to directing all of my focus on implementing the platform on affordability voters voted for," Mamdani said in his announcement.
A Fond Farewell
His home was in the Astoria neighbourhood, an area renowned for its diverse immigrant communities and culinary diversity.
"To my neighbors in Astoria: many thanks for exemplifying the true spirit of New York City," he noted.
"Although my address will change in Astoria, the community will continue to reside within me and the work I do," he added.
Political Debate
In his race for mayor, Mamdani connected his central policy – a rent freeze – to his circumstances as a tenant.
However his opponents, mainly ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for living in the rent-stabilized unit although he is from a well-known family.
Not All Mayors Stayed
Not all mayors have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, preferred to remain in his private home on Manhattan's Upper East Side throughout his tenure, which concluded in 2012.
Instead, Bloomberg said he believed it ought to be a place for official events, and championed a major refurbishment of the historic mansion.
A Grand New Home
As he settles into Gracie Mansion near his inauguration on 1 January, he will find himself in an environment a stark contrast to his modest Astoria apartment.
Featuring pale yellow exterior, forest green window covers, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house situated by the East River.
Inside, the lower floor of the classically designed mansion is appointed in the spirit of the home's historical period.
The compound, which reportedly has five bedrooms, also includes increased security measures to safeguard the mayor and his family.
Haunted History
Some residents have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.
Chirlane McCray, the partner of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that doors occasionally opened and shutting on their own, and the floors emitted odd sounds.
Former Mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "I don't care the skeptics say," he declared in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."
A Critical Policy Issue
Mamdani's current apartment is under rent control, a policy where the city regulates on how much property owners can raise the rent each year.
City residents view rent-stabilized housing as essential protections as the cost of housing rises faster than the means of many residents.
Records showed Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Per figures from the real estate platform Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
